Alternatives to animal testing
Line of Inquiry: An inquiry into the process of animal testing
What are some ways we can avoid animal testing and save all of these helpless animals lives? Well I have done some research and discovered that there are many, many alternatives to animal testing but here are three I found interesting. Cell cultures, cell cultures could be very useful in getting rid of animal testing because most types of human and animal cells can be grown in a laboratory. Also scientists have found a way to make cells grow into 3D structures like miniature human organs which could make a more realistic way to test different remedies. Another reason why this could work is because cell culture are/were key developments in areas such as cancers, sepsis, kidney diseases and AIDS, they are also used in chemical safety testing, making vaccines and drugs.
Computer models, since computers are getting more and more advanced, it is becoming more possible to replicate parts of the human body. Computer models of the heart, lungs, kidneys, skin, digestive system and musculoskeletal system already exist. They can be used to conduct virtual experiments based on existing information and mathematical data.
Volunteering, technology has had many advances that make it safe for humans to volunteer to be tested on. A technique called micro-dosing is able to show the progression and treatment of brain disease. They are able to help researchers understand the causes by comparing with healthy volunteers.
